Cellulose bioshapes are unique templates for preparation of a multitude of organic, inorganic and hybrid functional materials. In this work, we present and discuss the recent advances in our research in creating new materials using cellulose bioshapes in directed self-assembly and template synthesis of functional materials. Directed self-assembly was used to prepare reactive interfaces on fibre surfaces to overcome poor reactivity in water and enhance surface engineering of advanced materials. Photoactive fibres were prepared using this strategy and new stimuli-responsive materials suitable for photo-crosslinking were obtained. Fibres were also applied as directing substrate for hybridization with layered double hydroxides (LDH) and organic-inorganic hybrids for advanced applications in composites were designed. Organic-organic hybrids were prepared using co-precipitation of cellulose-lignin to shape bioactive particles. Cellulose templates were used to prepare inorganic nanoparticles with enhanced surface area and new mesoporous materials based on LDH. Our results indicated that cellulose is a versatile biotemplate for directed self-assembly based on charge and hydrophobic interactions and for template synthesis of advanced organic, inorganic and hybrid materials.
