The Ugi-Smiles reaction is the multicomponent reaction (MCR) of a phenol, amine, aldehyde, and isocyanide that is used to generate highly functionalized amides. This work investigates products that can be accessed through the use of propargylamine as the amine component in this one-pot process. Propargylamine combined with 2-nitrophenol, an aldehyde, and an isocyanide in a 1-pot synthesis can be used to create a multitude of Ugi-Smiles products. Current efforts are focused on the reactions of Ugi-Smiles products with alkyl azides to provide triazole formation, accessing compounds that are structurally similar to known antifungal derivatives.
