Reaction of isatoic anhydrides (1) with highly functionalized aryllithium reagents (2) afford 2-aminobenzophenones with electrophilic side chains of the type (3). Studies of the synthetic utility of these 2-aminobenzophenones toward the preparation of tricyclic systems [for example, benzofurans where E = CH<sub>2</sub>Cl (4)] will be discussed.
