Up-conversion is a process that occurs when low energy light in the near-infrared region is converted to higher energy visible light through multiple photon absorption or energy transfer. Utilizing sensitized triplet-triplet annihilation allows for the generation of high energy photons from low energy light. This process shows much promise for single junction solar cells, enabling them to exceed the Shockley-Queisser limit via capturing of low band gap photons and converting them to higher ones which can be absorbed by solar cells. Previous research has revealed PbSe semiconductor nanocrystals in combination with rubrene emitter produce up-converted light. Our investigation involves using tetracene derivatives to enhance this up-conversion. Tetracene shows a high absorption in the visible region, along with its HOMO-LUMO gaps are well suited for up-conversion of photons. Addition of derivatives have shown over 200 times enhancement via up-conversion process.
