Extensive research in the Levine group has focused on the use of commercially available cyclodextrin and cyclodextrin-based derivatives for the binding and detection of a variety of highly toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls. Reported herein is more recent work in our group towards the development of synthetic organic macrocycles for enhanced supramolecular properties, including toxicant binding and detection, as well as organic polymer-based pesticide detection. Rational design, synthesis, and evaluation of these novel macromolecular architectures enables us to develop vastly improved understanding of the complex relationship between structural features of the macromolecules, their ability to engage in non-covalent interactions with small molecule analytes, and detection application performance based on such non-covalent interactions.<br/>
