We investigated antibacterial properties of paper filled with inorganic filler particles modified by polyelectrolytes multilayering with polyvinylamine (PVAm) and poly acrylic acid (PAA). Polyelectrolytes multilayering was conducted on clay particles or ground calcium carbonate (GCC) particles. Antibacterial filled paper was prepared in two ways: (1) internal addition of the modified inorganic particles with 3 layers or 7 layers and (2) surface pigmentizing of the modified inorganic particles with polyvinyl alcohol on to the filled handsheets. Antibacterial test was conducted with gram positive Listeria Monocytogenes and gram negative E. Coli. (O157:H7). Both of the handsheets filled with the modified fillers and the the pigmentized handsheets showed antibacterial performance. Antibacterial performance was better in the case of the pigmentized handsheets compared to the case of the handsheets due to higher contents of the modified filler particles. Moreover, the handsheets filled with the modified fillers showed higher mechanical properties than the handsheets filled with untreated fillers. Consequentially, paper with antibacterial properties and high strength could be produced with applying the inorganic filler particles modified by polyelectrolytes multilayering technique.
