The cooperative binding of CO2 between a Lewis acidic and a Lewis basic site has been demonstrated by the CODH enzyme, as well as in synthetic complexes, and is hypothesized to have a stabilizing effect on reductive catalysis. This project aims to investigate this interaction by incorporating a crown ether functionality into a cobalt salen complex, which will support a Lewis acidic alkali metal cation in close proximity to a transition metal center for cooperative carbon dioxide activation. This framework allows for a detailed understanding of the effect of a series of alkali cations on CO2 reactivity, and will also serve as a platform to study the effect of Lewis acid strength on the reduction potential of the neighboring transition metal.
