Antioxidants that occur naturally in our bodies, as well as from dietary sources, help reduce oxidative stress by donating electrons to free radicals, therefore lowering reactivity. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the body posses unpaired electrons that can cause damage to lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Antioxidants can be quantified using UV-Vis spectroscopy, and our technique was validated using quercetin. Using a colorimetric silver nanoparticle assay, the antioxidant capacity of commercial antioxidant drinks will be quantified and compared to the analysis provided by the companies.
