The lack of diversity in STEM fields is a long-standing problem the scientific community faces. Despite the efforts of many organizations, including the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health, STEM fields still suffer from a lack of inclusivity. Many universities have acted upon these disconcerting trends and launched initiatives within their departments. The University of California, Los Angeles’ Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry formed the Organization for Cultural Diversity in Chemistry (OCDC), a graduate student-led group that promotes diversity in chemistry through sponsored lectures series.<br/>In 2010, Steven Lopez and Crystal Valdez took leadership of OCDC and grew the small organization of 4 members to over 30, increased the number of sponsored symposia and diversity-focused lectures by academic leaders, and created K-12 and community college outreach programs incorporating the Los Angeles community. These efforts awarded them and the now Organization for Cultural Diversity in Science (OCDS), the regional Stanley Israel Award.<br/>Upon completion of the Ph.D. program, Steven and Crystal joined leadership with other recently graduated professionals to form the non-profit organization called Alliance for Diversity in Science and Engineering (ADSE). The ADSE board supports, organizes, and oversees local, graduate student-run organizations that reach out to students and scientists of all ages and backgrounds. We connect scientists across the nation, showcase nontraditional career paths and underrepresented minority experiences in STEM, and educate students about opportunities in the sciences. This talk will highlight our present efforts in promoting the missions of OCDS and ADSE.
