Improvements in lithium-ion battery (LIB) safety, efficiency, and composition are essential for the emergence of many new portable technologies. Silatronix, a company based in Madison, WI, synthesizes organosilyl solvents for use in such LIBs. Silyl solvents are highly stable electrochemically but previous electrolytes have lower conductivity values when compared to the conventional carbonate electrolytes. The diffusion coefficients, transference numbers and molar conductivities of electrolytes containing these organosilyl solvents in addition to other cyclic and linear carbonates were determined using a PFG-STE NMR diffusion experiment. Solvation shells for the lithium and anion salt were also investigated via variable-temperature T1 NMR experiments. We will report results on several blends of silyl solvents with cyclic carbonate (EC, PC), linear carbonate (EMC, DEC) and methyl butyrate (MB) solvents with LiPF6 or LiTFSA salt. An electrolyte blend containing diethyl carbonate (DEC), ethylene carbonate (EC), methyl butyrate (MB) and an organosilyl solvent with the LiPF6 salt was found to have high ion diffusion, a high lithium transference number, and a high molar conductivity which are all important transport properties for electrolyte commercial use in LIBs.
