A preparatory chemistry course, CHMY 105, was offered in a blended format Fall 2015 for the first time at Flathead Valley Community College (FVCC). Lessons learned from implementation of a fully online introductory chemistry course by a colleague the prior year aided in design of CHMY 105. The two person development and implementation team for this course included a chemistry faculty member and an instructional designer with a chemistry background. Implementation of lecture material included a mixture of pre-recorded lectures using a Lightboard, synchronous lectures through Zoom, and worksheets. Students traveled to the Kalispell campus one weekend to complete six laboratory experiments. Additional laboratory experiments were completed by students at home using a lab kit created by FVCC. Weekly webcam office hours via Zoom, proctored exams, online lab group discussion boards, and the ALEKS online homework system were also part of the online course design. The successes and challenges of the planning, creating, and implementation process will be discussed, along with student feedback. A substantial portion of the material developed by FVCC is available as OER resources at SkillsCommons Repository through the Consortioum for Healthcare Education Online (CHEO).
