Instructors of large enrollment chemistry courses routinely use online homework to support student learning. Advantages of online homework over traditional homework include immediate feedback to students on question correctness, promotion of students’ active learning, and reduction in the amount of time instructors devote to grading. Our ten years of research into the outcomes of online homework has shown (i) improved general chemistry success rates, (ii) a decrease in the general chemistry female-male success rate gap to a non-significant level, (iii) its perception as one of the more useful course aspects for learning organic chemistry content, and (iv) generally positive attitudes toward use of online homework with a majority of students indicating improved study habits. The results of our research on online homework use in chemistry coursework along with best practices for its use will be presented.
