N-heterocyclic amines have served as components in bioinorganic model compounds, imaging agents and catalysts.  The function of a ligand in this family can be modified by changing the ring size, denticity, and donor atoms.  The Green Research Group has applied this knowledge to produce a new group of pyridol based macrocycles (L2-L3) incorporating a pyridol moiety into a 12-membered macrocyclic ring.  The pyridol moiety engenders radical scavenging capacity and tuning of the electronic character of the ligand set.  The N-donors have been shown to bind a range of transition metal ions in a range of geometries.  Catalytic C-C coupling activity has been observed with Fe(III) derivatives.  The efficiency of this activity has been related to the donor capacity of the ligand set.  In a separate study, the ligands alone have been shown to mitigate the formation of toxic amyloid aggregates and reactive oxygen species related to the Alzheimer’s disease (AD).  Both <i>in vitro</i> and <i>in vivo </i>results indicate L2, specifically, has the ability to cross the blood brain barrier and decrease the molecular features associated with AD.  This seminar will focus on the inorganic coordination chemistry of L2-L3 compared to similar, classic ligands as well as their applications in catalysis and medicinal chemistry.
