Recent progress has been made in isolating Ge(II) and Ge(IV) complexes using bulky Schiff base and related ligands. While synthetic approaches to produce such complexes continue to appear, applications of these systems in organic transformations are relatively unreported. Electron oxidation/reduction chemistry that is important to a variety of catalytic reactions is arguably similar within transition metals and germanium, but germanium chemistry offers a potentially more economical route to such compounds. Fundamental knowledge of structure is key to fully realizing the potential of germanium complexes as reagents. In this work, several examples of complexes with phenolic Schiff base ligands and Ge(II) and Ge(IV) were synthesized using inert atmosphere techniques. Homoleptic complexes containing two salicylaldiminato ligands and heteroleptic complexes containing one salicylaldiminato ligand and one amide were prepared. A (CH3)3Ge-salicylaldiminate complex was also synthesized. Studies of Ge(II) and Ge(IV) complexes in oxidative addition/reductive elimination reactions with aryl halides will be explored. All compounds were characterized by 1H , 13C, and 73Ge-NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction studies when possible.
