This presentation will describe past and current contributions of my group in the study of fundamental organometallic bond cleavage and formation reactions. In our work to develop catalytic systems for challenging transformations such as aerobic functionalization of alkanes or aerobic olefin epoxidation, we have carried out detailed mechanistic studies of many essential organometallic reactions, e.g. oxidative addition and electrophilic activation of carbon-hydrogen bonds, reductive elimination of carbon-hydrogen, carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds, olefin insertions, and the reactions of metal hydride and metal alkyl complexes with dioxygen. We have gained significant understanding of controlling factors and features that promote these basic reactions. The generality of such reactions and their potential/limits for incorporation into aerobic oxidations will be discussed.
