The use of multimetallic assemblies with non-innocent ligands is one viable strategy to effect demanding multielectron, multiproton transformations of small molecules like CO<sub>2</sub> and N<sub>2</sub>. Towards this end we have developed a novel bisimidazole phosphine ligand capable of flexibly coordinating two metal centers in close proximity. The unsubstituted nature of the imidazole groups not only allows Lewis acid coordination, but also allows participation in the activation of small molecule substrates. The synthesis of several new mono- and bimetallic complexes and their unique reactivity will be discussed.
