Chloramphenicol, originally derived from the bacterium <i>Streptomyces venezuelae</i>, is an inhibitor of bacterial ribosomal peptidyl transferase activity. It is also known as Chloromycetine and Paraxin and is a broad-spectrum antibiotic exhibiting activity against a variety of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. In this study, the vibrational (Raman and infrared) and electronic properties (UV-Vis absorbance) of chloramphenicol were obtained. In addition, theoretical calculations were also performed and compared with the experimental results.
