The ACS journal, <i>Environmental Science and Technology,</i> has, by multiple measures, established itself as the premier venue for scholarly articles on the varied aspects of environmental science. On the occasion of its 50<sup>th</sup> year, it is fitting to reflect on how the journal achieved such prominence. Perhaps not surprisingly, ES&T ranks at or near the top among all journals that publish environmental chemistry and engineering. While not historically true, the same metric is now a fitting attribute for environmental biology papers in the journal. Advances in environmental toxicology, contaminant bioaccumulation and bioavailability, and environmental microbiology are now routinely documented in the journal. ES&T has been the leader in the pollutant biodegradation area since the mid-1980s. Thus, the current and future strength of the periodical is a reflection the interdisciplinary nature of the field itself as well as the philosophy of the founding editor, J.J. Morgan, who wrote in the first issue, “The research pages are … devoted to all aspects of environmental chemistry, and to … papers from … other fields…”, including biology.
