Several new iridium complexes with water-soluble mono- and diphosphine ligands were synthesized and characterized, and their reactivity towards small molecules was studied. Chloro(1,5-cyclooctadiene)iridium (I) dimer was reacted with bis(p-sulfonatophenyl)phenylphosphine (bspp), 1,2-bis(di-4-sulfonatophenylphosphino)benzene (dsppb), 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA), and tris(hydroxymethyl)phosphine (THP), in ratios of 1:4 in methanol to produce [Ir(COD)(bspp)2]Cl (1), [Ir(COD)(dspp)]Cl (2), [Ir(COD)(PTA)Cl] (3), and [Ir(COD)(THP)2Cl]. Reactions of (1) and (2) with small molecules such as CO and H2 and yield iridium carbonyl, monohydride, and dihydride complexes while (3) did not yield any oxidative addition products with small molecules.
