Poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) PEDOT is the most successful commercially available conducting polymer finding applications ranging from bioelectronics, energy and optoelectronics (solar cells and OLEDs). Functional EDOT or ProDOT monomers are searched in order to afford useful pre and post functionalizable PEDOT type conducting polymers. This operation nowadays results quite complicated, due to many organic synthetic steps. Our research aims to create an easy synthesizable functional monomer/polymer. In this presentation we will introduce the synthesis and polymerization of carboxylic acid functional propylenedioxythiophene (ProDOT-COOH). This monomer was synthesized in a three steps synthetic method, in grams quantity, through a cheap and scalable process. ProDOT-COOH is an excellent synthon to introduce further functionalization such as nitroxide, trithiocarbonate or phosphonate groups. The main objective of this presentation is to show the synthesis and design of new ProDOTs monomers and the resulting conducting polymers that can find applications in bioelectronics.
