ortho-Phenylenes are a class of aromatic oligomers that are connected at the ortho positions. Like biological macromolecules, such as nucleic acids and proteins, the ortho-phenylenes fold into helical conformations in solution. Being able to control the twist sense of the folding of ortho-phenylenes would broaden their usefulness. The purpose of our research was to coerce the helical folding into a majority conformation of P (right-handed) or M (left-handed). Control of the direction of folding may be achieved by altering the configuration/nature of terminal groups. Assessment of `the folding of the compounds by 1H NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) spectroscopy, circular dichroism spectroscopy, and other techniques will be discussed.
