Multifunctional hybrid nanocrystals are interesting synthetic targets due to their collective or synergistic properties arising from distinct domains fused by solid-solid interfaces. While the specific properties are often related to the configuration and spatial arrangement of domains, the precise control of domain structure in hybrid nanocrystals can be challenging and sensitive to reaction parameters. We present a facile phase segregation method to synthesize novel metal-semiconductor hybrid nanocrystals starting from alloy particles with pre-programmed compositions. Ternary sulfide semiconductor domains with tunable compositions are utilized as novel reaction entries to obtain various heterodimer nanoparticle compositions via solution-mediated transformations. The nanoparticle evolution from alloy seed particle to the high-order hybrid nanoparticles with different compositions and spatial arrangements provides a platform for the design and engineering of high-order heterostructured nanoparticles with multifunctional properties and applications.
