Additive manufacturing (AM) has become a useful method for a myriad of applications. Traditional AM processes such as 3D printing uses stepwise time-consuming layer-by-layer fabrication process thus a macroscopic object of several centimeters high takes hours to manufacture. Continuous Liquid Interface Production or “CLIP” utilizes an oxygen-permeable window, which creates an oxygen-rich “dead-zone” where the oxygen inhibits photopolymerization at the interface between the window and manufactured part. The dead-zone enables continuous production eliminating time-consuming coating, delaminating, repositioning, re-coating steps, and therefore speeding up the fabrication process 25 to 100 times compared to conventional 3D printing processes such as stereolithography (SLA). Novel materials are at the heart of the progress that will allow CLIP compete with traditional thermoplastic manufacturing methods such as injection molding. Development of novel resins with tunable mechanical properties has been receiving attention in the 3D printing industry. Our research focuses on design, development, formulation and modification of novel resins for CLIP. Formulation of two-stage curable, tough, and high Tg epoxy-acrylate resins and thermo-mechanical characterization of CLIP manufactured parts will be presented.
