Protection-deprotection strategy is an essential tool in organic synthesis that has enabled the production of everything from pharmaceuticals to peptides, dietary supplements, hygiene products, and functional materials. It is truly central to organic chemistry. While providing the major advantage of selectivity, a major disadvantage of protecting groups is the inherent increase in the number of steps in a synthesis and, as a result, the likely decrease in overall yield. Developing alternatives to the classical protection-deprotection strategy should, therefore, improve the yield, and thus decrease the cost and time associated with producing desired molecules. The major obstacle to progress in this area is the general inability to carry out chemical reactions in the presence multiple reactive sites on the same molecule. This poster details the alternative approach to protection-deprotection involving synthetic receptors that can selectively protect reactive groups in a non-covalent fashion.
