In the past decade, there is a renaissance of interest in visible light photoredox catalysis for small molecule synthesis. Photon energy is harnessed to catalyze challenging covalent bond formations. In addition, photoredox catalysis has also been applied in atom transfer radical polymerization for the synthesis of polymers with controlled architecture and molecular weights. Iridium and ruthenium polypyridyl complexes have been the workhorse photoredox catalysts; however, their high costs and sustainability concerns motivate development of organic photoredox catalysts. We have employed a combined computational and experimental design of visible light organic photoredox catalysts for polymer and small molecule synthesis. Specifically, we have investigated dihydrophenazine and phenoxazine derivatives as strongly reducing photoredox catalysts. This talk will highlight the design of organic photoredox catalysts tailored to possess a highly reducing excited state, absorption profile in the visible, and the ability to form a charge transfer excited complex.
