The garnet structure has been called the “fruitfly of magnetism" because the rich compositional diversity is ideal for developing fundamental knowledge about magnetic interactions in the solid state. Using low-temperature powder neutron diffraction and symmetry analysis, we have identified that the magnetic interactions in CaY2Co2Ge3O12 produce chain-like motifs oriented along the body diagonals of the cubic unit cell with moments pointing parallel to the chain direction due to the strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the Co ions. This talk will explore the consequences of this unexpected magnetic symmetry and the impact of compositional tuning on the crystal chemistry and resultant magnetic properties.
