The efficient synthesis of biorelevant compounds using earth abundant metal catalysts is an ongoing effort in chemical synthesis. Our laboratory is particularly interested in atom economic functionalizations of unsaturated compounds using cheap, earth abundant catalysts. We have discovered an iron-catalyzed arene prenylation method and a TMSCl/ZnBr<sub>2</sub> co-catalyst system for the hydroarylation of olefins. This presentation describes our development of these methods and our current understanding of the mechanistic aspects of the reactions.
