This lecture will outline a hypothesis-driven research program aimed at utilizing catalytically generated carbocations, and carbocation equiavlents, in chemo- and stereoselective transformations. Specifically, the application of weakly coordinative and chiral anions to such cationic intermediates will be discussed as a means to generate molecular complexity from minimally functionalized starting materials. We will describe these efforts from the perspective of catalyst design and mechanism-informed reactivity studies.
