Carborane clusters have been recognized as promising ligands for transition-metal catalysis. Characteristics of these ligands such as their large steric bulk, weak coordination ability, and inertness render these ligands excellent for catalyst design.  Thus we present the synthesis of carba-<i>closo</i>-dodecaborate anions and functionalization with halogens to alter steric and electronic properties. Iodinated, brominated and chlorinated derivatives of the carborane cluster have been synthesized and characterized.  Transformation of these imazolium salts to their corresponding N-heterocyclic carbenes can then be preformed.  <br/>
