Team-based learning (TBL) is an active learning applications-based teaching modality that has been increasingly adopted in professional schools. TBL utilizes both small and large group interactions within the classroom. A modified TBL approach is utilized to teach material in two upper-division chemistry elective courses, <i>Mass Spectrometry</i> (CHEM 4501) and <i>Environmental Chemistry</i> (CHEM 4521), at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. In the TBL model, information for each course is presented in specific modules. Students review materials available to them via Blackboard, which include assigned readings and instructor-developed course notes. When students arrive to class, they take an individual quiz, called a Readiness Assurance Test (iRAT), to gauge their preparation and basic understanding of the material based upon a set of specified learning outcomes. Upon completion of the individual assessment, they take the exact same quiz with their team members (tRAT). Students receive the score for both the iRAT and tRAT. Upon completion of these short, multiple choice quizzes, the instructor provides immediate feedback and is able to stimulate discussion of confusing or difficult topics. In-class time is spent completing team Application Exercises, which are written to promote critical thinking and deeper conceptual understanding. The implementation of this model into Environmental Chemistry (for three semesters) and for Mass Spectrometry (for four semesters) is discussed. Student feedback, comments, and evaluation of this system is provided along with examples of the types of questions included in the RATs, Application Exercises, and exams.
