The preparation of nanoscale metal oxides with novel features and applications continues to be of interest in a variety of fields, including green chemistry. High surface-area nickel oxide and magnesium oxide crystals with primarily 111 facets have been investigated by the Richards group for over a decade. The Lewis basicity caused by these facets gives these materials unique catalytic properties. Examining modifications of these seemingly simple nanomaterials elucidates even more dynamic properties and application potentials. In this talk, synthesis and characterization of MgO (111), NiO (111), and mixed metal oxides such as NixMg1-xO (111) and MgxLi1-xO (111) will be presented, in addition to current and future catalytic applications of these nanoscale materials.
