Arylazothioformamide (ATF) chelating ligands have previously been reported capable of dissolving zerovalent late-transition metals directly into solution for separation and removal. Our investigation of these ligands has focused on coordination complexes of metals at varying oxidation states towards quantifying the products for metal identification and resultant removal of metal contaminants. Our efforts on metal-ATF complexes of copper (I) halides have yielded stark colorimetric changes in absorbance and dramatic rise in extinction coefficients. Crystal structures of these ligands with various copper (I) halides have indicated intriguing dimeric complexation as shown in <b>2</b>. Current efforts are directed towards metal identification and purification of materials utilizing the immiscibility of metal complexes in various solvents as relatively benign removal conditions. Metal contamination is a critical issue as many materials contain trace metal impurities (TMIs) from late stage transition metal catalysis reactions. These unique metal-ligand coordination species could prove useful in many forms of detection, separation, and sequestration of valuable and/or toxic metals and yet be environmentally responsible and economically pragmatic.
