Tissue engineering combines three-dimensional (3D) cell encapsulation and biodegradable scaffolds and is the most promising alternative to organ transplantation. However, there are limited biomaterials that combine suitable mechanical, electrical and biological properties for this task. Room-temperature ionic liquids (ILs) are promising chemical in the field of material synthesis due to negligible vapor pressure, low flammability, high ionic conductivity, and high electrochemical stability. Among a variety of ILs, Bio-Ionic liquids have received much interest for biomedical applications due to low toxicity. Choline is a precursor for the phospholipids (i.e. phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin) the main components of biological membranes. It is produced in human and plant tissue in the significant amount. Here, we synthesized a novel choline based ionic liquid conjugated conductive hydrogels, which can simultaneously offer conductivity, biodegradability, and 3D cell encapsulation. The developed conductive hydrogel provides biocompatibility and biodegradability both in vitro. Also, the resulting conductive hydrogels promoted the adhesion, proliferation and electromodulation of C2C12 muscle cells in vitro.  The synthesized biomaterial led to the formation of 3D functional hydrogels, which can potentially be used for muscle tissue regeneration.
