Bipyramidal shape anatase TiO2 (BAT) with {101}-exposed facets was synthesized by hydrothermal process, using sodium titanate as the precursor in lithium salt solution at 200 °C. The obtained anatase TiO2 powder consists of different-sized bipyramids ranging from 100 to 800 nm. In our previous work, BAT shows excellent photodegredation performance on methylene blue owing to its high surface activity of {101}-exposed facets and good crystallinity. In addition, BAT also exhibits outstanding antibacterial performance on Escherichia coli (E. coli). The antibacterial results show that the initial inactivation rate constant of BAT is 0.0075 min-1, which is significantly larger than commercial P25 TiO2 (0.0013 min-1). These results are consistent with our previous work. Even P25 has larger surface area than BAT by 13 times and possesses the advantage of heterojunction, BAT still tremendously overcomes P25 on both of photodegredation and antibacterial performance. In this work, the optical density method was used to measure bacterial concentration and the main influences of photocatalytic activity on antibacterial performance are further investigated.
