The formation of various nitrogen-based and carbon-based disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in the chlorination of ciprofloxacin, a typical fluoroquinolone, was firstly investigated in this study. The results showed that the chlorination of typical fluoroquinolone antibiotic ciprofloxacin could produce trichloromethane, trichloroethane, dichloroacetonitrile, trichloronitromethane, trichloroacetone and other chlorinated organic compounds and the chlorination time, chlorine dosages as well as pH values made significant impacts. The addition of Br<sup>-</sup> could generate brominated DBPs with the declination of chlorinated DBPs, in which trichloromethane was major product. This study would provide the theoretical basis for the formation of byproducts on disinfection of the raw water contaminated by fluoroquinolones.
