Cycloparaphenylenes have garnered significant interest over the past eight years as potential starting materials for the bottom-up synthesis of carbon nanotubes and for their fascinating optical and electrochemical properties. Our synthetic target is a D<sub>3h</sub>-symmetric cyclophenylene derivative that contains both para- and meta-linkages, and our approach uses a trialkynylbenzene core as a template to direct the desired cyclization the ring. Functionalization of meta-linked benzenes in the targeted structures can project groups directly into the center of the cyclophenylene ring and extend them linearly away from the center of the ring, features that are not possible in (fully para-linked) cycloparaphenylenes. Synthesis and property investigations, as well as potential applications as catalysts and liquid crystals, will be presented.
