Nanomaterials are materials with morphological features on the nanoscale, with special properties stemming from their dimensions. The extremely fascinating and useful properties of nanomaterials make them versatile materials in various fields of science, ranging from material science, to energy, to medicine. Because of this, knowledge on the interactions of nanomaterials with different biomolecules must be obtained. The interaction of four nanomaterials (aluminum oxide, silicon oxide, titanium oxide, and zinc oxide) with the enzymes catalase and lipase was investigated using various optical spectroscopic methods (absorbance, fluorescence, and circular dichroism). Results showed reduction of absorbance in both enzymes mixed with aluminum oxide and zinc oxide. Significant reduction in the emission intensity was observed in all mixtures with aluminum oxide showing the highest reduction on both enzymes. Changes in the conformation of the enzyme in the form of reduction of percentage of the alpha-helix were also observed upon addition of nanomaterials to the enzymes.
