Poly dimethyl siloxane based compounds act as surface active compounds in the paint industry. Dow Corning supplies a variety of compounds for these applications. BYK-Chemie also has a variety of compounds that are used such as BYK 333, which are suited for these applications. These compounds have a very low surface tension and are able to reduce the surface tension of the overall coating solution. When the surface energy of glass from windshield is lower than that of the water from rain, then the rain drops bead up uniformly on the glass and clear the windshield. When formulated and applied on windshields of cars and other vehicles, the coating solution modifies the windshield by lowering the surface energy of the glass and makes rain drops bead up and drain down rapidly, resulting in the elimination of the usage of wipers. Alternatively, these compounds can be formulated into windshield washer fluid, which also simultaneously eliminates the usage of wipers. This manuscript describes the compounds used, influence of their molecular weights, their formulations, and the results of these experiments.
