Anion photoelectron spectroscopy has proven to be a remarkably useful tool to obtain fundamental thermochemical and structural information for stable and transient species. This approach has proven especially useful when coupled with high-level theoretical analyses. I review briefly the experimental methodology and discuss two examples that illustrate both the opportunities and the essential need for collaboration between theorists and experimentalists. The two anions described here arise from electron addition to the methyl radical and the hydroxymethoxyl radical (H2C(OH)O●). In the second part of the lecture we employ anion photodissociation spectroscopy to explore the molecule-by-molecule solvation of ozonide (O3–) with both “sticky” (H2O) and a non-reactive (Ar) solvents. Beyond solvation structure, this last study has the possibility to address the hypothesis that ozonide may play a role in ion-catalyzed initiation of aerosol formation.
