The ACS Committee on Chemical Safety recently produced a new booklet, Guidelines for Chemical Laboratory Safety in Secondary Schools, which provides suggested safety-related learning objectives for high school chemistry students. The guidelines also outline a protocol, designated by the acronym RAMP, for designing and writing improved safety procedures for chemistry experiments. In this presentation, we will explore examples and applications of the four principles of safety: Recognize the hazard; Analyze the risk of the hazard; Mitigate the risk; and Prepare for emergencies.
