The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYC-DEP) is responsible for cleaning the wastewater and protecting the environment in New York City. The Newtown Creek wastewater treatment plant in Brooklyn tests the treated wastewater from all 14 plants every day via its chemistry and microbiology research laboratories. When samples arrive in the lab they are separated into four different groups: acidified, non-acidified, processed solids, and total solids. After they are tested for their pH value, samples are composited according to an established flow sheet. Details of this procedure and examples of cases encountered daily will be described. The difference in the processing of total suspended solids (TSS) and total solids (TS) using primary and secondary digesters that reduce the degree of pathogens during the treatment process will also be highlighted.
