Polyphosphazenes, [RR'PN]<sub>n</sub>, are inorganic polymers with a broad range of properties largely determined by the nature of the groups R and R' attached to the phosphorus in the PN backbone. Polymers with simple alkyl, aryl, bromoaryl, and alkynyl groups directly attached by P–C bonds have been prepared by condensation polymerization of N-silylphosphoranimines. These groups can then be modified by deprotonation-substitution reactions at methyl groups, aromatic substitution reactions, Pd-catalyzed cross coupling on bromoaryl groups, Cu-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reactions, and anionic and ATRP grafting reactions. Our recent work is directed toward developing additional post-polymerization methods and attaching bioactive groups to the PN system. Results related to the reactions and characterization of poly(alkyl/arylphosphazene) derivatives with azide, pyridine, phenol, and sulfonium groups will be presented.
