A tripodal and facially coordinating bis-(N-heterocyclic carbene)phosphine ligand has been developed, with two protic N-heterocyclic carbene (PNHC) wing-tips. When coordinated to a ruthenium(II) metal center, these PNHC sites can be deprotonated and have displayed metal-ligand cooperation in CO2 activation and reduction with H2. The ability to deprotonate the PNHCs have also made a second site available for metalation, introducing a novel ligand platform for bimetallic complexes. The synthesis of a library of (i) variously ligated LnRu(PNHC)2PPh complexes and of (ii) bimetallic complexes supporting both early and late transition metals in the second coordination site will be presented. In addition, stoichiometric reactivity studies and preliminary results showing catalytic activity under high pressure and temperature conditions will be discussed.
