The use of hydrogen as potential clean and renewable fuel has inspired significant efforts towards developing catalysts for hydrogen production. Over the past years, a considerable number of hydrogen evolution catalysts based on metal complexes have been reported. Based on our previous electro- and photocatalytic studies of molecular Co complexes with a pentadentate ligand, N,N-bis(2-pyridinylmethyl)-2,2'-bipyridine-6-methanamine (DPA-Bpy), we have shown that the modifications of pyridyls with isoquinoline groups result in significant lower overpotential and higher TOF for electrocatalytic H<sub>2</sub> production. In order to understand the electronic and steric factors on catalytic properties such as overpotential and TOF for hydrogen production, ligand modification of the DPA-Bpy-derived pentadentate ligands and their effects on catalysis will be discussed.
