Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have multiple applications in biomedicine, such as imaging, drug delivery or therapy. In our research we exploit the characteristic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of AuNPs for photothermal treatment of A-375 melanoma cells infused with AuNPs. Exposure to electromagnetic radiation at 532 nm near the peak SPR results in a significant temperature change in the immediate surroundings of AuNPs, which can possibly lead to cell damage. For our photothermal experiments we utilize small (&lt;5nm), self-synthesized nanoparticles with various, fluorescent, gallic acid based ligand shells. Their small size enables those AuNPs to penetrate the cell membrane.<b> </b>Cell viability of A-375 melanoma cells infused with AuNP’s with different ligand shell compositions is investigated in dependence of photothermal treatment over various time intervals
