<br/>Working with Lee Cronin in the field of polyoxometalate chemistry had a profound effect on my later career. This presentation will give a brief summary of lessons I have learned from Lee and things I try to pass on to my own students. In particularly, I will focus on the use of polyoxometalates (POMs) embedded into functional heterogeneous matrices. This approach enables permanent immobilization of POMs, so that their technological deployment becomes possible. In addition, synergistic POM-matrix interactions can lead to new and unexpected reactivity. I will discuss novel embedding concepts leading to advanced nanostructured composites: Incorporation of POMs in ionic liquids (ILs) leads to so-called POM-ILs where the materials properties can be optimized by modification of the anionic and cationic components. The use of POM-ILs and their derivatives, POM-SILPS (supported ionic liquid phases) in corrosion protection and water purification as well as their chemical design for future applications will be discussed. Embedding of POMs in conductive matrices is an attractive route for electrically wiring POMs to conductive materials. These concepts have led to composites where redox-active POMs are linked to carbon nanotubes, graphene quantum dots as well as conductive polymers, enabling applications in battery materials and supercapacitor development. The talk will examine how different linkage strategies enable the design of materials with unique properties and stability.
