Operando spectroscopy is when the structure of the catalytic material is captured in a suitable catalytic reactor while the catalytic event takes place and catalytic activity is measured online. This definition implies that the experiment is performed in a cell that can be onsidered a reactor and that care should be taken that the kinetics of the system to be analysed is comparable to that of the real system.<br/>This contribution will describe the methodology used at the Paul Scherrer Institut to address these issues in the specific case of automotive catalysts. Our approach exploits custom designed cells to perform spectroscopy and diffraction experiments and the utilization of transient experimental conditions, thus time-resolution, to force the catalyst to reveal its reactive structure vis à vis steady state conditions. Combination of various spectroscopy and diffraction methods is essential in this approach to search for the active structure from various perspectives, those of the adsorbates and of the material.
