Deriving from the seminal time-resolved molecular beam mass spectrometry work of A.H. Zewail, Femtosecond Time-resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy (TRPES) was developed in the early 1990s as a way to increase the specificity of the ionization probe via dispersing the emitted electrons as to their kinetic energy and angular distributions. TRPES is particularly well suited to the study of excited state non-adiabatic process such as internal conversion, intersystem crossing, isomerization, proton transfer etc. We briefly review the past 20 years of TRPES and discuss recent progress and opportunities.
