Ices coating dust grains in the interstellar medium (ISM) are the place where many complex organic molecules (COMs) are formed. Advances in laboratory techniques can now be used to unlock information on the composition and thermal history of ices in the ISM by studying how spectral bands of ice analogs change in response to changes in the chemical and physical environments. I’ll use our work on CO2/H2O ices to show how laboratory spectroscopy techniques are applied to characterize morphology, diffusion and ordering kinetics of CO2 and mixed CO2/H20 thin film ices. I'll also show that the IR absorption profile of 13CO2 in ices can be used as a tracer of the thermal history of ice mantles.
