Nanostructured materials play important roles in a wide range of advanced technology applications. But as demand associated with the ‘Internet of Things’ and electric vehicles increases, one of the more challenging topics relates to the design and development of robust, high capacity storage materials.  Through consideration of surface chemistry, coupled with relevant chemical and physical interactions, we can modulate the volume changes during lithiation/delithiation of high capacity, active nanoparticles such as magnetite and silicon. This presentation will provide an overview of how consideration of nanostructured electrode design through a systems approach facilitates the development of robust, nanotechnology alternatives.  <br/>
